Based on the direction of relative sliding between <\/span><i><span>hanging wall<\/span><\/i><span> e <\/span><i><span>footwall <\/span><\/i><span>two main types of fault are identified:<br \/>\n<\/span> <b>distensive fault <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><b>normal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which forces act with a pull on the blocks; at the moment of rupture, these forces induce a sliding of the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hanging wall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with respect to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">footwall<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-765\" src=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/normal_fault.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1887\" height=\"1090\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/normal_fault.jpeg 1887w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/normal_fault-300x173.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/normal_fault-1024x591.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1887px) 100vw, 1887px\" \/><\/span><\/i><b>compressional fault<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>reverse <\/b>or <b>thrust<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in which forces compress the rock blocks until, at the time of rupture, there is overthrusting of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hanging wall <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">above the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">footwall<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-767\" src=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/reverse_fault.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1712\" height=\"1076\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/reverse_fault.jpeg 1712w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/reverse_fault-300x189.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/reverse_fault-1024x644.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1712px) 100vw, 1712px\" \/><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vertical faults, for which there is no clear distinction between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hanging wall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">footwall<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the slip is in general predominantly horizontal and described as\u00a0 <\/span><b>transcurrent faults<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For this reason, in addition to a qualitative description of the rupture mechanism (compressive, transcurrent, etc&#8230;) there is a parameter called <\/span><i><span><strong>rake<\/strong> <\/span><\/i><span>which describes precisely the angle of the direction of the rupture on the fault plane, i.e., the sliding angle of the <\/span><i><span>hanging wall<\/span><\/i><span> with respect to the <\/span><i><span>footwal<\/span><\/i><i><span>l<\/span><\/i><span>. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-773\" src=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/transpressive.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1738\" height=\"1063\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/transpressive.jpeg 1738w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/transpressive-300x183.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/transpressive-1024x626.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1738px) 100vw, 1738px\" \/><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rake <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slip<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, together,<\/span> thus <span>define <\/span>the mechanism and amount of mutual slip between the margins of a seismogenic fault.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two other angles are used to define the slope and orientation of the fault plane and are, respectively, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>dip<\/strong> <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><strong><i>strike<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dip<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describes the angle of the fault plane with respect to an horizontal plane and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strike <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that between north and the upper edge of the fault. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-775\" src=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/dip_and_strike.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1983\" height=\"1062\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/dip_and_strike.jpeg 1983w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/dip_and_strike-300x161.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/dip_and_strike-1024x548.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1983px) 100vw, 1983px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What actually happens during an earthquake is more complex than a simple uniform slip on a flat surface; the fault represents a rupture zone that can have large geometric heterogeneities. For strong earthquakes, the main fault may consist of several segments, and adjacent secondary faults may rupture at the same time. Depending on the complexity of the rupture, all the parameters illustrated above (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slip<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rake<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dip and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strike<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can vary, even greatly, from one point on the fault to another, or from one segment to another.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-777\" src=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fault_variable_parameters.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1675\" height=\"992\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fault_variable_parameters.jpeg 1675w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fault_variable_parameters-300x178.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/fault_variable_parameters-1024x606.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1675px) 100vw, 1675px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not easy to reconstruct the geometric complexity of a fault, nor the way its parameters vary in the volume of rock; except for those portions of the fault that outcrop at the surface, direct observation of the sliding at depth is in fact not possible.
