And in fact these satellites are called SAR (<em>Synthetic Aperture Radar<\/em>). To acquire these images, the satellites do not need sunlight or a cloudless sky: it is the satellites themselves that send an electromagnetic wave toward the Earth and then record its return to the satellite. Somewhat like a flash, which, however, the human eye does not perceive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-646\" src=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SAR_antenna.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SAR_antenna.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SAR_antenna-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At first glance, these are not particularly interesting images. They are black and white, a bit salt and pepper, with the mountains appearing to tilt to one side. This is a SAR image of the volcano Etna, in Sicily, Italy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-636\" src=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SAR_image_Etna.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1074\" height=\"802\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SAR_image_Etna.jpg 1074w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SAR_image_Etna-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/SAR_image_Etna-1024x765.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1074px) 100vw, 1074px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, these images contain very useful information. In fact, there is a technique, called InSAR (SAR Satellite Interferometry), which combines two images acquired over the same area, but on two different days, by which it is possible to reconstruct the ground deformations that occurred between the first and second image. Normally, an area is not subject to large deformations within a few days; but <strong>if an earthquake occurred in the period between the two SAR acquisitions, the InSAR technique highlights the displacements that the earthquake generated.<\/strong> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-789\" src=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/sar_before_after.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2020\" height=\"1014\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/sar_before_after.jpeg 2020w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/sar_before_after-300x151.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/sar_before_after-1024x514.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2020px) 100vw, 2020px\" \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result of this processing is called <strong>interferogram<\/strong> and is presented as a <em>fringe<\/em> image, where the fringes are just a measure of how much the ground has moved at a specific point. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-634\" src=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/interferogram.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1480\" height=\"1188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/interferogram.jpg 1480w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/interferogram-300x241.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.finitesource.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/interferogram-1024x822.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1480px) 100vw, 1480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this image, for example, each fringe corresponds to about 3 centimeters of displacement.
